In an earlier blog entry I wrote about Prayers from inside the Ark, poems by Carmen Bernos de Gasztold. They have inspired some of my music. As there are 27 poems, I have been using two at a time and calling each set Two Prayers from inside the Ark, and writing for different groups of instruments.
I thought I would share one set for solo viola. They are the prayers of the goldfish and the cat. You can either listen to a mp3 version by clicking on the picture, or follow the Soundcloud link.

Prière du petit poisson rouge
The little goldfish prays: My God, I turn round and round in this hard clear crystal, but find no way out. Lord, deliver me from this small water and the terrifying sights I see through it. Return me to your free floods and clear springs. Turn me from a little goldfish in his glass prison to a living spark in your gentle reeds. So be it – Amen. |
Prière du chat
The cat prays: Lord, I am the cat. I’m not exactly asking – I don’t ask anyone for anything – but if you happen to have a little white mouse in some celestial barn, or a saucer of milk, I know someone who would appreciate them. Someday, wouldn’t you like to curse the whole race of dogs? I would say, “So be it – Amen.” |
