GRIEG Vektersang (Watcher's song) from Lyric Pieces Op 12 (No 3)
arranged for chamber orchestra (minimum: strings, 2 flutes, oboe, 2 clarinets, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones and guitar/harp; optional: oboe 2, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, percussion, timpani). This descriptive piece has the subtitle, 'Composed after a performance of Shakespeare's Macbeth.' The central section is called, Intermezzo (Spirits of the Night). The watcher may refer to the two chamberlains whose job was to guard King Duncan while he slept in Macbeth's castle. Lady Macbeth — who called the spirits, 'Come, you spirits ... unsex me here, / And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full / Of direst cruelty!' (1.5.40-43) — got the chamberlains drunk so that her husband could kill the king.
